Affiliate Links In Articles?
PotPieGirl on July 2nd, 2008
One of the hardest things about article marketing is the process it takes to actually convert a reader into a sale. First you have to make sure that someone clicks to even read your article, then you have to hope they read it all the way thru to where they even SEE your author bio box. Then, you have to hope they actually click a link TO your niche site where you offer your affiliate products…and then, you have to hope they click to read the sales page, and THEN, you cross your fingers that they BUY the product.
Whew! Exhausting…and a lot of opportunity to lose a reader in the process! Wouldn’t it be nice if you could simply put your affiliate link straight to the product in your article? But article directories, like EZineArticles, don’t allow that, right?
Wrong! There IS a way to get your affiliate link into your article marketing author resource box so you can send your readers STRAIGHT to the affiliate product.
This is a neat little trick that I’ve been using. It is approved by EZineArticles, and it DOES work! I was doing my ‘hell day’ for one of my sites and found myself using this little trick - it made me wonder if my new readers here at 6StepNicheSites.com knew how to do this, too.
The short answer to getting an affiliate link in your article is to a) buy a domain name, and then b) redirect the domain name to the affiliate page.
Sound expensive and complicated? It’s so NOT! You don’t even need website hosting to do this…. just a domain name!
To do this today, I bought a cheap .info domain name at GoDaddy.com (a whopping 99 cents!). I did NOT redirect the name servers to direct the domain name to my hosting account. Instead, I went into my GoDaddy account, clicked on the domain name I wanted to use, chose “forwarding”, and then put my Clickbank affiliate link in the space for the url you want the new domain to go to. This makes it so when someone clicks the link for mysupernewdomainname.info, it redirects them immediately to the affiliate sales page.
Then, I clicked another tab on the same screen and chose ‘url masking’. This makes it so when someone clicks your forwarding link, they are sent to the sales page (with you affiliate code in tact), BUT they don’t SEE your hop link in their browser window! Since it is ‘masked’ it will show the domain name you bought for this purpose.
Nifty, huh?
Best part is, if the affiliate program I am promoting doesn’t convert well, I can simply pick a new one and have the domain name redirect to THAT product instead!
Now, as we have discussed, the purpose of article marketing (aka “Hell Day”) is not just to get traffic and eyeballs on the products you are promoting, it is also to generate well-keyworded back links to your niche site. Based on this, and based on the fact that EzineArticles will allow TWO links in a bio box, I make one link to my niche site and the other link it my re-direct.
Are You Sure This Is Ok?
Yes, I am sure. But just to clarify, let me quote EzineArticles editorial guidelines:
EzineArticles.com Editorial Guidelines: (AFFILIATE PROGRAMS):
Affiliate links will be allowed if the link is a domain name you own which forward/redirects to the affiliate link from the top-level of the domain name. For example, it is permissible to forward to an affiliate link from:
http://your-company-name.com/
…but it would not be permissible to forward to an affiliate link from:
http://your-company-name.com/page.html
http://your-company-name.com/subdirectory/
http://your-company-name.com/subdirectory/page.html
http://sub-domain.your-company-name.com/Any article with an affiliate link that does not adhere to this guideline will cause the article to be rejected.
Cool, huh? For 99 cents you CAN get an affiliate link within the articles of your article marketing campaigns!

P.S. thanks again for the wonderful “Detox” lens. It’s been quite a little money maker so far.

I am new to marketing.
Do I have to buy a
domain name for each affiliate product then redirect it? Should I host a site and put all my affiliates on one page
with links to each affiliate site?
You can email me back at

Thanks for the help

Hi Jennifer,
I was reading your post on using domain forwarding and article marketing to sell affiliate products.
You mentioned that this strategy will work with clickbank. Do you know if it violates the TOS for Ebay or Amazon?
Thanks,
Marjorie
P.S. Thanks for convincing me to buy the squidoo cash machine.
2 new lenses and 4 sales in 5 days!
September 9th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
@ Franky -
Yes, you will need one domain name per each affiliate product when using this method.
@ Marjorie -
You will need to check the TOS for each advertiser. It’s hard to give a blanket answer to that - and Lord knows, I sure don’t want to be wrong!
4 sales in FIVE DAYS! You go, girl! That is awesome!
September 12th, 2008 at 1:32 am
Jennifer, Could you explain how to get an avatar into Squidoo. I have asked on WA as I cannot log into the forum in Squidoo. I have followed all of the suggestions. It will go into the dashboard and my toolbox not into the lens, Thanks, Marv
September 12th, 2008 at 1:39 am
Hi Marv =)
Marv - have you tried uploading the image directly into the bio area of a single lens? Then choose to make it your ‘default’?

Hey, I’ve tried this and it still says the page is parked by godaddy. Do I just leave it for a bit longer to see the website show up?
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Yes, Holly… it takes some time for it to “take”. Usually about an hour for me.
October 26th, 2008 at 3:45 am
Hi PotPieGirl,
I am Noor on WA and I have been following you on Squidoo. Today I bought the One Week Marketing and just got to page 25. You are amazing! I am going to follow your OWM to the letter and make it work for me.
I have been trying to make money from the net for over a year now. So far I made about $300, plus the frustrations of seeing a lot of zero earnings lately especially since the economic downturn.
WA has provided me with a good understanding of html, linkings, keyword research and all those internet marketing thingies. But there is this one snag (I don’t know what it is) that keep me from putting all my knowledge into making money online. At times I thought of giving up.
You just gave me hope. I don’t want to be the 97% who give up. I would love to shout out that first Clickbank sale after following your OWM. And I hope you will help me if I get stuck along the way.
Thanks so much for sharing.

Hi Potpie, I have been looking for a long time and despite all the money I spent I have not been able to make money on line
Your program looks great and I WILL MAKE IT WORK WITH YOUR HELP!
Thank you

Manuel

Hey PPG,
Do you specifically tell in your book how to create an opt-in box to create a list since Squidoo outlawed those a while back? Thanks! kristie
November 11th, 2008 at 4:48 am
Jennifer, I found this didn’t work for me until I got help from GoDaddy support to change an IP address. Maybe that’s because it’s the first time I had tried to set something like this up.
November 11th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Chris -
That sounds like an unusual situation. Usually it is as simple as buying a domain name, going into your GoDaddy account, and enetering the url you want that new domain name to forward to.
Glad you got it straightened out tho!

Hey Jennifer,
This is great and so easy! I just set up my first redirect and couldn’t believe how easy it was!
February 9th, 2009 at 7:39 am
Hi,
My question is if it does convert better your articles like this.I have never tried, I always send my traffic to a lens or blogger review page, but I find it frustrating when I look into statcounter stats and see how many clicked through the sale page. I am saying this because I always here people on forums to not do that.
February 27th, 2009 at 10:28 am
Thanks potpiegirl, that is great info and for 99 cents, might as well have one for everything you can find. In reply to the ebay/amazon question, I seem to be ok doing a direct adwords link to eBay auctions so I see no reason for that one being a problem.
March 10th, 2009 at 1:15 am
I heard something about this on TV today, and then stumbled upon your blog.
March 22nd, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Hey, PotPieGirl! That is one yummy trick! I emailed you last night and am doing so now again, I was having issues with opening OWM once I dowloaded it; after and hour of searching around, I couldn’t believe what I saw: my adobe reader was an empty file! My new laptop came with IE for the standard browser and I just recently changed it to Google Chrome so maybe that messed up my Adobe. ANYway, I have OWM in full and am diggin’ in! THANK YOU ~ Joel

Hey Jenn,
Wondering if you need to do this for goarticles too ?
March 23rd, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Hiya Sean =)
GoArticles seem to be a bit more lax about the affiliate link thing, but this tactic certainly works well there, too =)

I love this trick, too! I use Host Gator and followed along just fine until I got to the “mask url” part. Host Gator doesn’t seem to offer that option that I can see.
Anyone else run into that problem?
March 24th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Pam–With this trick, you do all the settings at the site where you bought the domain name.
You don’t do anything at HostGator at all.
Jennifer—Thank you so much for this trick! I know how to forward domain names, but I never thought of doing this. You are the *best*!

Hi PPG,
Can clickbank tracking id’s (tid’s) be used with a domain redirect? So, if I have 10 golf articles, and each article has a domain (e.g golf-tips.com) re-directing to a vendor page, how would I know which articles a sale has resulted from? Or isn’t this possible with a domain re-direct?
Thanks
Adrian

Brilliant! An elegant solution to the problem. I’ve tried various redirect scripts and services but this is the best - simple and flexible. Thanks, PPG!

Dear Potpie girl,
I have some doubt about your Domain hosting as given above.
If I am writing many articles promoting various products, can I use the same “Domain” (parked) for each of the Articles redirecting to my merchant site?
Please reply.

Can I redirect a clickbank vendors “pitch page” to my new hot domain?

PotPieGirl - Hello! I just purchased your One Week Marketing (OWM) package. I’m beyond thrilled with the content and concise manner in which you narrate the steps to follow. I’ve “attempted” to implement various strategies for a number of years… and I admit; I was always caught by the “shiny things” [oooh shiny!!]
I allowed that to stop my momentum. Nothing I followed really resonated with me, and I felt like I was drudging through their concepts. I have wanted to do affiliate marketing for some time and you provide a viable formula and means of obtaining my goals! I’m SO excited. I’ll state this as being my DAY 1 and the beginning of this enterprise. I will see you along the way and I am eager to share my success with you. I can only imagine where I will be one year from now. Working the plan! Taking action. Much appreciation!

Hi Everybody!!!!

I also just purchased OWM. Thanks Jen. Great article dude.
May 11th, 2009 at 8:42 am
Hi Jennifer, just bought your OWM a couple days ago, it’s great!
I bought a domain to redirect as you recommended, the .info version of the product’s domain, but after reading this article I’m thinking I should have chosen something different, more generic in case I want to change affiliate products. Any advice on choosing the domain name?
Anyway, I use Namecheap as my registrar. In case anyone else does, the ‘URL Frame’ option is the one you want to use for masking the redirect.
May 12th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Another section of Ezinearticles seems to not allow this kind of linking.
Here is the text of Ezinearticles rules
WEBSITE LINKS/URLS There is a total limit of (4) active or inactive links allowed in the article, which consists of both the BODY and the RESOURCE BOX.
1. Maximum of (2) “Self-Serving” active or inactive links/URLs to a website that you own, control, or have an interest in.

Jennifer, great post. My question is for the people that made a comment about just buying the One Week Marketing guide. I am new to affiliate marketing and I want to know if the guide has helped you to make money. I don’t want to know how much. I just want to know if you had sales and how long it took for your first sale. Thanks in advance.
May 13th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
Hi Jennifer,
I’ve a Q. about masking the redirect. I’ve heard many veteran marketers said that it’s ok to forward your domain but do not mask it.
Reason being that some browsers cannot capture the clickbank id cookies when masked and it will result in “affiliate=none” i/o “affiliate=our clickbank id” at the bottom of the order page.
Hence, we will not be credited with any commission. What are your thoughts on this please.

Jennefer, I cannot change my name on Squidoo. My first Lens was about a GPS and my nickname was lost without tommy. Now all my lens keep coming up with Lost without tommie in the bio address. Can this be fixed?
May 23rd, 2009 at 4:47 am
Great explanation, but my question is wouldn’t it be really easy to just put a one page Website up and actually have some content? I guess that would be one more click before they get to the sales page.

Thanks for the great information. I tried it out on my first lens, following your One Week Marketing, and it worked great. Now I can go back to writing articles for Ezine with no problems.

url masking is against clickbank’s TOS. This is from the hoplink FAQ –
“10. Will I get referral credit if I hide HopLinks by making them open into a frame, iframe, layer, applet, image, or other sub-window object?
No. These are illegal HopLinks. For security reasons, and to ensure proper tracking of your referrals, all HopLinks must be targeted to the top level of a new or existing window.”
godaddy masks the link by opening the page in a frame, thus making the hoplink illegal. Forwarding is fine though.
July 2nd, 2009 at 1:35 am
Jennifer, I’m interested in your response to what Mitch says above about masking/cloaking violating CB’s TOS.
I had heard a couple of years ago that masking/cloaking didn’t work with Clickbank, but when I’ve tried it recently it does still show the correct affiliate ID at the bottom of the Clickbank page. But if it is against their TOS, even though it might work, maybe you risk losing your Clickbank account by doing this?
Can you comment on this? I think that’s a really important and valid issue that Mitch has raised.
July 2nd, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Hi,
I just wanted to thank you sooo much, because of you I still have some hair left on my head. I was pulling it out before trying to follow ezine link rules:) You are awesome!
I am a bit concerned regarding the post from MICH. Have you had any problems with this?
Thank you hon and bless you!

very helpful post, you should post more stuff related to this.
July 7th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
I’ve been cloaking my hoplinks since day one - all of them, and I get sales. So I have to assume the links are ok with Clickbank.
July 8th, 2009 at 4:52 am
That is pretty cool.my question is if the first product that you are promoting does not convert and you decide to change and redirect to another product, what happens to the link in that article.Lets say you were promoting a loss weight product and change to an IM product will you not loss credibility from your readers or followers.
July 11th, 2009 at 6:07 am
Donna and Mitch have a very valid point-I found when I did this was still getting many hops but was not getting sales-I changed to just forwarding which helped-the product turned out not to be a great seller any way-However since then have been scared to mask as do not want to get banned from Clickbank-my view for my self is it is just not worth the risk-just stay with forwarding-one point to mention when the site was masked i also had Adwords going for that site,it worked ok,Adwords will not let you redirect by forwarding-any ideas on that-great site and posts-Thank you.
July 11th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Hi there,
Are you getting commission from the link that is masked?
I was taught by a super affiliate NOT TO MASK your affiliate link as it strips out cookie and you would not get paid.
Please let me know. I’d like to use masking if it still works.
Thanks.
July 16th, 2009 at 9:01 pm
Great tip PotPie, I will use it, but I’d also be interested to find out more about the Clickbank view on masking.
July 24th, 2009 at 1:53 am
Great tip pot pie girl. Just one question, by doing this how are we going to get them on our list?
August 7th, 2009 at 5:06 am
“The short answer to getting an affiliate link in your article is to a) buy a domain name, and then b) redirect the domain name to the affiliate page.
Sound expensive and complicated? It’s so NOT! You don’t even need website hosting to do this…. just a domain name!”
If I had a nickel for every time some one told me, in a forum or ebook, to do a “simple” re-direct….well, you know what I mean.
This is the very first time I have seen an explanation of exactly what a re-direct is and what it actually means and does.
I am not new to IM…a few years and many thousands of dollars “Going Ga-Ga for Guru’s” as I call it. Trying this and that and believing…trusting people by their word.
PPG, I was about to give up…again. I am not sure how I found you exactly I am just glad I have. I have read the Conversation with Nick and am reading the guide now. Finally, a real step by step how-to guide.
A little early for thank yous but after the road I have been on for this many years it is nice to see a straight, to the point action guide that says what it does and does what it says. Not a bunch of fluff and junk and immediate pounding by the guru lists pumping this, that, and the other next big cure all mega fantastical end all, be all IM Junk!!
Not sure if this is the spot for this post but if I go looking for a forum or something I am sure that the “shiny things” will get me.
So just a little thank you for being real and genuine.
Now I am back to the guide…I’ll be back.
